Fed: Costello expects to stay on as Treasurer if re-elected

Treasurer PETER COSTELLO says he expects to remain in his job after the federal election.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has had to fend off questions over how long he may stay
in the job if re-elected and if he'll hand over to Mr COSTELLO.

Asked on Melbourne radio 3AW if he expects to be prime minister in the next three years,
Mr COSTELLO'S replied that he expects to be treasurer.

He's warned it's going to be a difficult period because interest rates are rising around
the world combined with very high oil prices.

He says this could mean a big fallout for Australia's economy if the country isn't
in experienced hands.
