Dems Collar 11th-Hour Support to Save Budget

WASHINGTON Late Thursday morning, Rep. Neil Abercrombie ofHawaii, who had declared his opposition to President Clinton'sdeficit-reduction plan, was locked in whispered conversation withthree fellow Democrats trying to change his mind.

They surrounded him and pointed fingers as Abercrombie, jaw set,continued to shake his head no.

Nearby, a Democratic leadership aide and a Democratic whipcounted votes on a piece of paper carefully shielded from curiouspassersby.
